Although dicyanamide (i.e., [N(CN)2]?) has been commonly used to obtain low-viscosity, halogen-free, room-temperature ionic liquids, liquid-crystalline salts containing such anions have remained virtually unexplored. Here we report a
Star-shaped fluorescent liquid crystals derived from s-triazine and 1,3,4-oxadiazole moieties

supporting information, p. 6117 - 6130 (2016/07/06)
Star-shaped molecules with a central triazine core appended with three 1,3,4-oxadiazole arms have been designed with the variation in the number, length and pattern of peripheral chain substitution. These compounds were investigated for their thermal, electrochemical and photophysical behavior. These nonconventional molecules stabilized wide range columnar phases and demonstrated how one can tune the liquid crystal self-assembly through simple structural modification. The photophysical properties of these star shaped molecules are extremely dependent on the number and pattern of peripheral chain substitution. These compounds exhibit blue and green luminescence in the solid/liquid crystal state. The ability to overcome aggregation induced quenching is due to the favorable packing of these molecules in the solid state. These solid-state emissive materials with good thermal stability and lower band gap may find applications in the construction of emissive displays and organic lasers.

A series of materials based on the aroylhydrazinatonickel (II) complex is synthesized and characterized. The molecule in the materials consist of two 4-benzoyloxy-benzene groups and two benzene rings having two or three alkoxy chains containing 6, 8, 10,
Peripherally fused porphyrins via the Scholl reaction: Synthesis, self-assembly, and mesomorphism

supporting information; scheme or table, p. 4822 - 4833 (2012/05/19)
Oxidative coupling of activated aryl groups attached to β-positions of the porphyrin ring provides convenient access to derivatives containing peripherally fused phenanthrene and benzo[g]chrysene units. Tetra(benzochryseno) porphyrin, reported here for the first time, contains a nonplanar, sterically locked π system and shows very intense electronic absorptions in the Q range of the electronic spectrum. Tetraphenanthroporphyrins show a tendency to aggregate in solution. In one case, a discrete dimer is formed, whose structure was investigated spectroscopically and theoretically. Derivatives bearing long alkyl chains are mesomorphic and exhibit columnar phases (tetraphenanthroporphyrins) and a monoclinic 3D phase (tetrabenzochrysenoporphyrin). The symmetry of column packing in the columnar phases is dependent on the number of alkyl chains per molecule. X-ray diffraction measurements show that, in spite of their nonplanarity, the aromatic cores in the mesophases are tightly stacked within the column. The corresponding stacking patterns were derived from the structure of the dimer, on the basis of geometrical analysis and molecular modeling.

The synthesis and mesomorphism of di-, tetra- and hexa-catenar liquid crystals based on 2,2′-bipyridine
Rowe, Kathryn E.,Bruce, Duncan W.
, p. 331 - 341 (2007/10/03)
2,2′-Bipyridines are known to coordinate to a wide variety of metal centres. In this paper, liquid-crystalline two-chained (dicatenar), four-chained (tetracatenar) and six-chained (hexacatenar) bipyridines are synthesised and their mesomorphism is described. For the tetracatenar bipyridines, a full homologous series, from tetramethoxy to tetratetradecyloxy, was synthesised, and the phase diagram showed a classic progression from nematic and smectic C phases at short chain length, through a cubic phase to a columnar phase.
