2- or 3-Oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazoles (1 or 2) when condensed with various secondary amines undergo an unexpected dehydrogenation to give the corresponding aromatized products (3-5, 9 and 12) instead of the expected enamines (6-8, 10 and 13).
