Reactions of 3-acetates of 3,5-seco-4-norcholestan-3,5α and 3,5β-diols with P(C6H5)3*CX4 (X = Cl, Br) and P(OC6H5)3*Br2 were examined. 3-Acetate of 5α epimer treated with both P(C6H5)3*CCl4 and P(OC6H5)3*Br2 afforded the elimination product. 3-Acetate of 5β epimer produced a bromo derivative with P(C6H5)3*CBr4, whereas the reaction with P(OC6H5)3*Br2 resulted in contraction of ring B, leading to three unsaturated products the structures of which were ascribed on the basis of their spectral properties and/or ozonolysis products.
