A method is proposed for the synthesis of 2-ethoxybenzoindole from naphthostyril and ethyl orthoformate.The compound reacts readily with 2-alkyl-1,3-dioxolanium perchlorates, forming monomethinecyanines, the hydrolysis of which leads to 2-alkyl-substituted benzoindoles.
