A kinetic investigation of the reaction of terminal alkynes with a ruthenium indenyl complex bearing an hybrid allyphosphine ligand was carried out to yield η1-vinylidene derivatives. The 18 electron complex of the Ru compounds reacted well through parallel pathways characterized by rate determining bimolecular interaction with the alkyne. It was found that the other pathway that involved intramolecular rate determining dissociation of the allylic double bond formed a transient 16-electron intermediate. The proposed arm-off mechanism regarding the allylphosphine ligand was given an experimental support, since it was found to be independent of the alkyne structure and also of the specific reaction involved.
