Under the conditions of acid catalysis 2-hydroxy-2-ethynyladamantane (I) is converted into adamantylideneacetaldehyde (II), which readily enters into the Knoevenagel and Wittig reactions.In the absence of a nucleophile in the reaction medium, compound (I) decomposes into adamantanone (III) and acetylene.
