An efficient electrosynthesis of homoallylic alcohols from allylic chlorides or acetates and carbonyl compounds in the presence of catalytic amounts of NiBr2(bpy) complex (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) is achieved in a one-compartment cell fitted with a sacrificial zinc anode. The role of both Zn(II) and Ni(II) species in the coupling reaction is pointed out.An exchange between allylnickel and zinc species is suggested, on the basis of the stereochemistry and kinetics of the allyl addition.
