Uses

Used in Light Microscopy:
Cedarwood oil is used as immersion oil in light microscopy, enhancing the clarity and resolution of microscopic images.
Used in Fragrance Industry:
Cedarwood oil is used as a fixative in fragrances because it blends well with other oils, contributing to the longevity and stability of the scent.
Used in Skincare:
Cedarwood oil is valuable for use on skin eruptions and to relieve itching. It is beneficial for acne and oily skin, and may be helpful in cases of dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.
There are two types of cedarwood oil:
1. Atlas cedarwood oil from Morocco (Cedrus atlantica): This type of cedarwood oil is known for its distinct aroma and therapeutic properties.
2. Juniperus virginiana (or red cedar) from the United States: This oil is very similar to true cedarwood and is derived from a juniper species.

Background and overview

Cedar wood oil is an important natural plant fragrance, belonging to the aromatic oil, which is a light yellow to yellow clear oily liquid with the characteristic aroma of cypress wood. The main components of cedar oil are α-cedrene, β-cedrene, cedrol and cedar wood, etc. It can be processed into a series of products for the formulation of perfumes for make-up and soap. Cypress oil can be extracted from the dry roots of cypress tree, being one of China's major exported essential oils.

Production method

It is sensitive to light, being soluble in 10-20 parts 90% ethanol, insoluble in water. The relative density is 0.94-0.95. Specific rotation -25 ~ -46°. Flash point of 110 ℃. It is irritating. The related products also include artificial cedar oil formulated with sesquiterpene and rosin. Cedar root, trunk or its waste are used as raw material; use steam distillation to obtain crude oil with the oil rate of 1-6%. Cedar crude oil was fractionated to obtain refined cedar oil.
