Musks is a product of animal origin, consisting of a glandular secretion from the male musk deer found in Tibet, southern China, northern India, and the Himalayan highlands. The reddish-brown, paste-like secretion has a strong, penetrating odor and is obtained from an internal pouch under the skin of the abdomen. The musk pouches are removed, dried, and hardened into musk grains. The odorous principle of musk is a macrocyclic lactone called muskone, which gives it a potent, musk odor with a strong animal note. Musk derivatives are prepared through alcoholic extraction, concentration, and petroleum ether extraction.
