Description

Hemlock oil, also known as spruce oil, is a pale yellow to light yellow liquid with a pleasant pine needle-like odor. It is produced in Canada and the northeast of the United States by steam distillation of needles and twigs from Picea mariana (black spruce), Picea glauca (white spruce), Tsuga canadensis (hemlock spruce), and related species. The oil has a specific gravity range of 0.900-0.915, refractive index of 1.4670-1.4720, and a specific rotation of +25° to +10°. It is soluble in 90% ethanol, with solutions becoming hazy when more than 2 volumes of ethanol are added. The ester content, calculated as bornyl acetate, ranges from 37-45%.
