Description
LANOLIN is a purified, yellowish-white, semisolid, fat-like substance extracted from the wool of sheep. It is insoluble in water but mixes with about twice its weight of water without separation. It is also soluble in chloroform and ether. Hydrous lanolin is a pale yellow-colored, unctuous substance with a faint characteristic odor, which separates into a clear oily layer and a clear water layer when melted by heating on a water bath.
Uses
Used in Pharmaceutical Industry:
LANOLIN is used as an emollient and an emulsifier for its ability to mix with water and provide a smooth, moisturizing texture to various formulations.
Used in Cosmetic Industry:
LANOLIN is used as an ingredient in cosmetics for its emollient properties, helping to soften and moisturize the skin.
Used in Textile Industry:
LANOLIN is used as a water repellent and conditioner for textiles, providing a protective layer and enhancing the softness and durability of fabrics.
Used in Food Industry:
LANOLIN is used as a component in certain food products, such as confectionery coatings, due to its emulsifying and moisture-retaining properties.
Used in Agricultural Industry:
LANOLIN is used as a protective coating for fruits and vegetables, helping to maintain their freshness and extend their shelf life.
Used in Manufacturing Industry:
LANOLIN is used as a lubricant and release agent in various manufacturing processes, such as the production of rubber, plastics, and metalworking fluids.
Production Methods
Lanolin is melted, and sufficient purified water is gradually added
with constant stirring.
Pharmaceutical Applications
Hydrous lanolin is widely used in topical pharmaceutical formulations
and cosmetics in applications similar to those for lanolin.
Hydrous lanolin is commonly used in the preparation of waterin-
oil creams and ointments. More water may be incorporated into
hydrous lanolin than into lanolin.
Safety
Hydrous lanolin is used in cosmetics and a number of topical
pharmaceutical formulations and is generally regarded as a
nontoxic and nonirritant material, although it has been associated
with hypersensitivity reactions. See Lanolin for further information.
storage
Hydrous lanolin should be stored in a well-filled, well-closed
container protected from light, in a cool, dry place. Normal storage
life is 2 years.
Regulatory Status
Included in the FDA Inactive Ingredients Database (ophthalmic,
topical, transdermal, and vaginal preparations). Included in
nonparenteral medicines licensed in the UK. Included in the
Canadian List of Acceptable Non-medicinal Ingredients.
Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 8020-84-6 includes 7 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 4 digits, 8,0,2 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 8 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 8020-84:
(6*8)+(5*0)+(4*2)+(3*0)+(2*8)+(1*4)=76
76 % 10 = 6
So 8020-84-6 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
