Opopanax oil is a yellow to greenish-yellow liquid obtained by steam distillation of the crude resin from Commiphora erythraea Engl. var. glabrescens Engl. or closely related species. It has an intense, warm, balsamic odor and tends to resinify on exposure to air. The oil is derived from the oleo-gum-resin exudate of the tree, which is native to Somaliland and has a fresh, balsamic odor reminiscent of myrrh.
