Elemi Resin, also known as Canarium luzonicum Miqu. or closely related species, is a gum resin obtained from trees growing in the Philippines. It is a yellow to orange mass of high viscosity with a fresh, citrus-like, peppery odor. Elemi oil, which is derived from the resin, is a colorless or pale-yellow, mobile liquid with a pleasant odor reminiscent of phellandrene. However, both the oil and the resinoid are not stable due to the oxidation of terpenes and the formation of peroxides, which may present a hazard of explosion after heating the oil. Upon storage, the oil tends to resinify and polymerize, and the odor can become disagreeable.
