C9, HUMAN, also known as the ninth complement component, is a single-chain glycoprotein found in normal human serum at a concentration of 60 μg/ml. It plays a crucial role in the immune system by participating in the formation of the C5b-9 complement membrane attack complex (MAC) on target surfaces upon activation of the complement system via either the classical or alternative pathway. Full lytic activity of MAC is achieved only after the binding of three to six C9 molecules to each C5b-8 complex.
