They function by inhibiting the sodium-potassium ATPase enzyme, which leads to an increase in intracellular calcium levels, thereby enhancing the force and frequency of cardiac muscle contractions. However, due to their narrow therapeutic index and potential for toxicity, their use has been largely replaced by safer alternatives in modern medicine. Despite this, digitalis remains an important historical and pharmacological reference in the treatment of certain cardiac conditions.
