Tritriacontane, 7-methyl-, also known as 7-methyltritriacontane, is a long-chain alkane with the chemical formula C31H64. It is a colorless, odorless, and non-polar hydrocarbon compound consisting of 31 carbon atoms and 64 hydrogen atoms. The presence of a methyl group at the 7th carbon atom differentiates it from other tritriacontane isomers. Tritriacontane, 7-methyl- is primarily found in waxes, particularly in the wax secreted by the female scale insect, Ceroplastes destructor, which is used in the production of shellac. Due to its high molecular weight and non-polar nature, 7-methyltritriacontane has limited solubility in water and is more soluble in non-polar solvents. It is used in various industrial applications, such as lubricants, greases, and as a component in the production of certain types of plastics and coatings.
