5-Acetoacetyl-6-methoxy-(1) and 6-acetoacetyl-5-methoxy-2,3-diphenylbenzofurans (2) undergo coupling reaction with aromatic diazonium salts to give 1-(2',3'-diphenyl-5'-methoxy-6'-benzofuranyl)- (3a-f) and 1-(2',3'-diphenyl-5'-methoxy-6'-benzofuranyl)-butane-1,2,3-trione-2-arylhydrazones (4a-f) respectively.These hydrazones (3 and 4) react with hydrazine hydrate and phenylhydrazine in acetic acid to yield the corresponding pyrazol derivatives (5-8).Hydroxylamine hydrochloride reacts with 3 and 4 to form the isoxazole derivatives (9 and 10). 2-Arylhydrazones (3,4) also react with semicarbazide hydrochloride to give pyrazoles (11,12).
