The reaction of the trinitromethane potassium salt with acrylonitrile or methyl acrylate in an aqueous solution of potassium carbonate leads to the formation of the potassium salt of 4,4-dinitrobutyronitrile, 4,4-dinitropimelonitrile, the potassium salt of 4,4-dinitrocrotononitrile, or the potassium salt of methyl 4,4-dinitro-2-hydroxybutyrate respectively. It is postulated that 4,4-dinitrobutyronitrile is formed during the addition of acrylonitrile to the dinitromethane released from the intermediate 4,4-dinitro-3-hydroxybutyronitrile, i.e., the product from the hydration of 4,4-dinitrocrotononitrile.
