The effect of the structure of the aryl residue on the geometry of a series of N-acetyl-N-arylnitroxyl redicals was studied by ESR spectroscopy. It was shown that the introduction of one ortho substituent leads to such an arrangement of the plane of the aryl ring and side chain that the unpaired electron only interacts with the ? system of the ring to an insignificant degree. The introduction of a second ortho substituent fully excludes this interaction. The stability of the investigated radicals also correlates with the presence of ortho substituents in the aryl residue.
