4-Methoxy-(Ia), 6-hydroxy-4,7-dimethoxy-(Ic), 4,6-dimethoxy-(Ib) and 4,6,7-trimethoxy-(Id)-5-acetoacetylbenzofurans react with cyanoacetamide, chloroacetamide and phenylacetamide to form the corresponding 3-cyano, 3-chloro- and 3-phenyl-4-methyl-2(1H)-pyridone derivatives (II, IV and V).Compounds (IIIa,b) are obtained from the corresponding IIa,b by reacting with methylmagnesium iodide and VIb by reaction of IIb with conc.H2SO4.
