The cyclic arsines, viz. 1-phenylarsolane )PA), 1-(o-tolyl) arsolane (o-TA) and 1-(p-tolyl) arsolane (p-TA) form four types of complexes with palladium(II) and platinum(II): (a) Pd(o-TA)(SCN)2; (b) ML2X2 (M = Pd, L = PA; X = Cl, Br or NCS; L = o-TA, X = Cl or Br; L = p-TA, X = NCS; and M = Pt, L = PA, o-TA or p-TA, X = Cl or NCS; L = o-TA, X = Br); (c) Pd2(p-TA)3X4 (X = Cl or Br); and (d) PtL3Br2 (L = PA or p-TA).All these complexes behave as non-electrolytes and are monomers with the exception of Pd(o-TA)(SCN)2 which is shown to be dimeric.Complexes of the types (a), (b) and (c) have been assigned square planar stereochemistry on the basis of their UV-visible spectra while the complexes belonging to type (d) appear to be five-coordinate.The IR data of the complex Pd(o-TA)(SCN)2 is also consistent with its dimeric nature as evident from the presence of S-bonded as well as bridging thiocyanato groups. However, the same data in the case of ML2(SCN)2 indicate S-bonding for M = Pd and L = PA or p-TA and both N-, S-bonding for M = Pt and L = o-TA.
