Reactions of pentaethoxides and pentachlorides of niobium and tantalum with benzilic acid have been carried out in different molar ratios and compounds of the type, 5-2n(Bz)n> and 5-2n(Bz)n> (where Bz represents the benzilato group, M = Nb or Ta and n = 1 or 2) have been isolated.Alcoholysis reactions of 5-2n(Bz)n> with excess of tert-butanol were also carried out and product of type, t)5-2n(Bz)n> were obtained.All the new complexes synthesised were characterised by elemental analysis, molecular weight determinations, ir and nmr spectral studies.
