Claisen rearrangement of cordoin (II) using acetic anhydride in dimethylaniline gives three major compounds, viz. 4'-acetoxy-2'-hydroxy-3'-(α,α-dimethylallyl)chalkone (IV), 4'-acetoxy-2'-hydroxy-5'-(α,α-dimethylallyl)chalkone (VII) and 2'-acetoxy-4'-prenyloxychalkone (VIII); and four minor compounds, viz. 2'-hydroxy-4'',4'',5''-trimethyldihydrofuranochalkone (III), 7-acetoxy-5-(α,α-dimethylallyl)flavanone (V), 7-acetoxy-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)flavanone (VI) and 2'.4'-diacetoxychalkone (IX).Mild alkaline hydrolysis of IV affords ψ-isocordoin (I), a naturally occuring furanochalkone isolated from Cordoa piaca .
