The reaction of formyl-phenyl-thiazoles 3-9 with ω-chloracetophenone 1 and p-nitrobenzyl chloride 2 was studied.It is shown that the Darzens reaction occurs easily with the 4-formyl derivates.There is some competition by the Cannizzaro reaction.The structure of isomers 16Z and 16E was established by 1H-n.m.r. spectroscopy.
