The respective 9-(2-alkoxyvinyl)carbazoles were synthesized by pyrolysis of 9-(1,2-dialkoxyethyl)carbazoles or 9-carbazolylacetaldehyde acetals.Their spectral data and the thermodynamic characteristics of cis-trans isomerization indicate that the p-? conjugation effect of the alkoxyl group predominates over that of the 9-carbazolyl group, as a result of which the polarization of the C=C bond in the investigated compounds is similar to that in vinyl ethers and is opposite to that in 9-vinylcarbazole.
