Electronic absorption spectra recorded immediately following UV light irradiation of M(CO)6 (M = Cr, Mo, W) solutions containing excess di-2-pyridylmethane (dpym) or 1,2-di-2-pyridylethane (dpye) indicate the formation of novel M(CO)5(dipyridylalkane) species. In these M(CO)5(dipyridylalkane) complexes the normally bidentate ligand is coordinated in a monodentate fashion. The photoproduced Mo(CO)5(dpym) complex decomposes to form Mo(CO)4(dpym) product via thermal ring closure. In contrast, the other M(CO)5(dipyridylalkane) complexes are thermally stable; these have been isolated and characterized by elemental analyses and by their electronic absorption and infrared spectra. Factors influencing the CO extrusion mechanism of M(CO)5(dipyridylalkane) are discussed.
