Aliphatic α-diketones react with sulfur tetrafluoride in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to give the corresponding tetrafluoroalkanes.In addition to 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorobutane, the reaction of butanedione with SF4 in the presence of catalytic amounts of HF yields 2,3-difluorobutyleneglycol-2,3-orthosulfite and fluoro-substituted ethers.Butanedione homologs yield tetrafluoro derivatives and fluoroolefins.
