Phenyl-substituted cyclopropenes with ether functions in 3-position react with Fe2(CO)9 under CO insertion to form 2-alkoxyfurans (5).As intermediates of this transformation metalorganic complexes with one Fe(CO)3- (2) or one Fe2(CO)6 group (3,4) attached to an opened cyclopropene ligand could be isolated. 2 are alkoxycarbonyl derivatives of the known complex type (η4-vinylketene)Fe(CO)3 (or (η3 : η1-allylcarbonyl)Fe(CO)3). 4 contains a 6-membered ring with Fe and the O atom of an inserted CO group as hetero atoms; in the isomer 3 the Fe atom is coordinated through an η2-bond of a phenyl group instead of a CO2R unit. The X-ray structures of two compounds of product types 3 and 4 have been determined.
