One of the fish-toxic chlorinated resin acids, 14-chlorodehydroabietic acid, found in kraft mill effluent is examined. When exposed to the fungus Mortierella isabellina, 14-chlorodehydroabietic acid is converted into a number of hydroxylated derivatives which show low levels of toxicity to fish. These biotransformation products were isolated and characterized.
