PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an azobenzene derivative useful as an intermediate of 2-substituted 4,4'-diaminoazobenzene used as a manufacturing raw material of a polyimide optical oriented film for liquid crystal display, and an effective manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: There is provided an azobenzene derivative represented by the general formula (1). R1 represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group which may be substituted, an acyl group which may be substituted and an alkoxycarbonyl group which may be substituted. R2 represents a hydrogen atom, an arylmethyl group which may be substituted, an alkali metal oxysulfonyl methyl group or an alkoxycarbonyl group which may be substituted. R3 is a nitro group, an arylmethylamino group which may be substituted, an alkali metal oxysulfonyl methylamino group, or an alkoxycarbonyl amino group which may be substituted.
