The reaction between (Me3Si)3CLi and BF3 in Et2O/THF gives the fluoride (Me3Si)3CB(F), which upon treatment with PhLi gives the corresponding phenyl compound (Me3Si)3CB(Ph).A single crystal X-ray diffraction study has shown that in the latter the three bonds to boron lie in a plane, which is almost perpendicular to the plane of the Ph group. The C-SiMe3 bonds (mean 1.900(12) Angstroem) are probably longer than the Si-Me bonds (mean 1.867(15) Angstroem), and the C-Si-Me angles (mean 113.0(13) deg) are larger than the Me-Si-Me angles (mean 105.6(12) deg).
