Unexpectedly, the oxidation of cycloheptatrienyl malonaldehyde 1 does not lead to cycloheptatrienylidene malonaldehyde 2, but yields the hitherto unknown benzylidene malonaldehyde 3, which exists in equilibrium with its dimer 4.
