Depending on the temperature, the reaction of 2,3-diamino-1,4-naphthoquinone with phthalic anhydride leads to the successive formation of 2-amino-3-(2-carboxybenzoylamino)- and 2-amino-3-phthalimido-1,4-naphthoquinone, which are converted in an alcohol-water solution of alkali into 2-(2-carboxyphenyl)-1H-naphthoimidazole-4,9-dione.The latter readily undergoes cyclization to 1,2-benzoylenenaphthoimidazole-4,9-dione.
