Cycloheptanecarbohydroxamic acid (CPHA) was synthesized, characterized and their pka determined spectrophotometrically as 9.70 at 25 °C and in buffers of0.1 mol/dm-3 ionic strength (7). The spectroscopic investigation of its reaction with Mo (VI) and VO (IV) in aqueous solution revealed the sole formation of 1:6 and 1:2 complexes at equilibrium. The isolated complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic moments, IR and electronic spectra studies. The magnetic and spectra studies of the isolated complexes indicate coordination via oxygen atom of the hydroxamate group. The interactions of both the ligand and its isolated complexes with some microorganisms have been studied. Both the ligand and its complexes show significant sensitivity towards the microbes and also, the related complexes can enhance antibacterial activity.
