N,N'-Diarylethylenediimines (Ia and Ib) react with N-arylmaleimides, maleic anhydride and the most active dienophile 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazolinedione to give the title pyrazines (IIa-f) and tetrazines (IIIa,b), respectively.Reactions of IIa and IIb with hydrazine hydrate and amines have also been investigated.
