The reaction of 2-picolyl methyl ketone hydrazine-S-methyl dithiocarboxylate with copper(II) chloride has been investigated by IR, electronic and ESR spectroscopy and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility.A square pyramidal structure is tentatively assigned to the complex formed. The results show that the ground state of the complex is of triplet multiplicity with the first excited state being a singlet +21 cm-1 higher in energy.ESR data confirm the existence of spin-spin coupling and a value of D = 0.0486 cm-1 was obtained and the g-values were g = 2.224, g = 2.038 and gav = 2.10.The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility in conjunction with the best-fitting procedure yielded, 2J = +21 cm-1 and θ = -3.8 K.The superexchange mechanism based on both interatomic and intraatomic electron transfer is proposed to account for the experimental data.
