Snthesis of Some 5,5'-Dimethyl- and 5,3'-Dimethyl-4,4'-dihalo-2,2'-dinitrodiphenylmethanes and Their Conversion into Related 11-Dibenzo-diazepine Derivatives

5,5'-Dimethyl- and 5,3'-dimethyl-4,4'-dihalo-2,2'dinitrodiphenylmethanes have been prepared from the related 5,5'-dimethyl- (IVa; R = NH2)- and 5,3'-dimethyl- (IIIa; R = NH2)-4,4'-diamino-2,2'-dinitrodiphenylmethanes.Reduction of these dinitro derivatives with LiAlH4 yields the corresponding 11H-dibenzodiazepine derivatives.
