By 1H and 13C NMR and electronic spectrometry it was shown conclusively that a β-nitrocarbocation, capable of reacting with methanol to give 1,1-di(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2-nitroethane, is formed by the action of tetranitromethane on 1,1-di(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2-dimethylethane.
