Aluminum, dimethyl-, also known as dimethylaluminum or trimethylaluminum, is an organoaluminum compound with the chemical formula (CH3)2Al. It is a colorless, volatile, and highly flammable liquid that is sensitive to air and water. Aluminum, dimethyl- is primarily used as a catalyst in the production of polyolefins, particularly in the Ziegler-Natta process for the polymerization of ethylene and propylene. It is also employed as a reducing agent in organic synthesis and as a fuel additive. Due to its reactivity, dimethylaluminum requires careful handling and storage to prevent hazardous reactions.
