The reaction of 1-(4,6-dimethoxybenzofuran-5-yl) (1a-e) and 1-(4,6,7-trimethoxybenzofuran-5-yl)butane-1,2,3-trione 2-arylhydrazones (1f-i) with phenylmagnesium bromide, p-tolylmagnesium bromide or benzylmagnesium chloride involves a 1,2-addition of one mole of the Grignarg reagent with formation of hydroxyketones (2a-t) together with demethylation of the methoxy group at C-4.From hydroxyketones hydrazones (5a-p) were formed.Structure assignements for the new products were based upon analytical and spectral data.
