Scission of the epoxy ring in 4,5α-epoxymorhinans: A convinient synthesis of β-dihydrothebaine, 6-demethoxy-β-dihydrothebaine and desoxycodeine-A (Chemistry of opium alkaloids, Part XXI)

The use of zinc and aqueous potassium hydroxide for the reductive epoxy ring opening of thebaine (1) and 6-demethoxythebaine (2) is described.The reaction affords exclusively β-dihydrothebaine (3) and 6-demethoxy-β-dihydrothebaine (4), respectively.The synthesis of desoxycodeine-A (9) has been improved and evidece for its configuration is discussed.
