Trimethylsilylethynyl carbonyl compounds in the Reformatsky reaction

The Reformatsky reaction with α-acetylenic carbonyl derivatives containing a free and protected ethynyl hydrogen was investigated.In the first case appreciable polymerization is observed.A significant increase in the yields of the β-hydroxy esters is observed with the introduction of the protecting trimethylsilyl group.The presence of the latter also permits successful dehydration of the β-hydroxy esters.
