The complex IrH3(CO)(dppe) (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) has been prepared from IrI(CO)(dppe) + BH4- under H2. Under irradiation or heating, IrH3(CO)(dppe) eliminates H2, yielding IrD3(CO)-(dppe) under D2 and IrH(CO)2(dppe) under CO. In C6D6 under vacuum, IrH3(CO)(dppe) shows evidence of H/D exchange only upon irradiation, indicating arene carbonhydrogen bond activation involving a photochemical process. When irradiation of IrH3(CO)(dppe) in C6H6 is performed under CO for longer times, benzaldehyde is produced as determined by NMR, GC, and organic derivatization methods. The amount of benzaldehyde formed appears to be limited thermodynamically and not kinetically. The equilibrium of the reaction C6H6(I) + CO = C6H5CHO(I) is also approached by the decarbonylation of benzaldehyde. However, true equilibrium is not reached because of secondary reactions which occur upon prolonged photolysis.
