(Chemical Equation Presented) A molecule makes its own catalyst: [RuCl(arene)(PCy3)]OTf (e.g. 1) with allyl or propyl propargyl ethers gives alkenylcarbene derivatives 2 by a metallo-retroene reaction. The latter species are efficient initiators for catalytic ring-closing metathesis of allyl propargyl ethers into alkenylcycloalkenes and of dienes into cyclic alkenes (see scheme).
