Production of 3(4),8(9)-dihydroxymethyl- tricyclo[5.2.1.02>.6]decane (A) involves: (a) hydroformylating dicyclopentadiene to give 8(9)-formyl-tricyclo[5.2.1.02>.6]dec-3-ene (B); (b) hydroformylating (B) to give 3(4),8(9)-bisformyl-tricyclo[5.2.1.02>.6]decane (C); and hydrogenating (C) to (A). Production of 3(4),8(9)-dihydroxymethyl- tricyclo[5.2.1.02>.6]decane (A) comprises (a) hydroformylating dicyclopentadiene at 70-150 [deg] C/0.5-10 MPa with synthesis gas in a heterogeneous system using an aqueous solution of water-soluble organic phosphorus (III) compounds complexed with Group VIII transition metal compounds to give 8(9)- formyl-tricyclo[5.2.1.02>.6]dec-3-ene (B); (b) separating the aqueous and organic phases and hydroformylating (B) at 70-140 [deg] C/5-35 MPa with synthesis gas in a homogeneous organic phase in presence of a Group VIII transition metal compound to give 3(4),8(9)-bisformyl-tricyclo[5.2.1.02>.6]decane (C); and hydrogenating (C) to give (A).

[SOLUTION]: To hydrogenate the hydroformylation product of the dicyclopentadiene in the presence of water, execute after water is added according to circumstances.
