The complex [ClRhH{P(t-Bu)2CH2C6H3CH 2P(t-Bu)2}], 1, with orthorhombic space group Pc21n has cell dimensions a = 7.879 (3) ?, b = 14.388 (4) ?, c = 22.868 (5) ?, V = 2592.4 (12) ?3, and Z = 4. Complex 1 can be dehydrohalogenated with NaN(SiMe3)2 to give an exceedingly reactive 14-electron species, [Rh{P(t-Bu)2CH2C6H3CH 2P(t-Bu)2}], 3, which interacts with aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Adducts of 3 can be formed with hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and ethylene. Treatment of 1 with the ylide -CH2-PMe3+ gave an adduct with a rhodium-carbon bond.
