Derivatives of naphtho- and anthraquinones are arylated by sterically hindered 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol in DMSO with the addition of potassium carbonate or potassium hydroxide.The reaction takes place selectively at the para-carbon atom of the phenol, and the corresponding 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl derivatives of 1,4-naphthol- and 9,10-anthraquinones are formed.
