Optically active glycols of the type S-(-)-MeCH(OH)-C(OH)Ar2 (III) have been prepared from ethyl S-(-)-lactate (II) by treatment with arylmagnesium bromides.Selective tosylation of III followed by treatment of the resultant monotosylates (IV, not isolated) with base gives the optically active oxiranes of the type R-(+)- (V).
