Acetylation of 1,4-dimethoxy-2-methylnaphthalene (1) furnishes 6-acetyl-1,4-dimethoxy-2-methylnaphthalene (3) and not the expected 3-acetyl derivative (2).The structure of 3 has been arrived at via the synthesis of models 10 and 5 whose structures have been established by chemical transformations and PMR spectra. 3-Acetyl-1,4-dimethoxy-2-methylnaphthalene (2) has been prepared from 1,4-dimethoxy-3-formyl-2-methylnaphthalene (7) through (i) Grignard reaction with methyl magnesium iodide and (ii) oxidation.
