Claisen condensation of 8-acetyl-5-benzyloxy-7-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylchroman (II) with powdered sodium and ethyl acetate followed by debenzylation with acetic acid-hydrochloric acid affords allopeucenin (III).Methylation of III using K2CO3-acetone-dimethylsulphate/or diazomethane furnishes the methyl ether (IV).
